[Malaysian] Government to ease living costs

The Star Online, Thursday April 17, 2008

SUBANG JAYA: The Government will come up with several initiatives within the next few days to help ease the people's burden due to rising costs of living, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The Deputy Prime Minister said the measures had already been drawn up by the Anti-Inflation Committee chaired by the Prime Minister.

He said the Government also wanted a way of communicating effectively with the public to make them realise that rising prices of goods was not due to any failure on the Government's part but due to global food inflation and supply problems.

"Malaysia is not the only country that is facing this pressure of rising prices – in fact it is worse in other countries," he said after chairing an Umno management committee meeting with Selangor Umno yesterday.

Najib said this was one of the problems that cost Barisan Nasional votes in the recent general election.

"The announcements will be made very soon," he said.

He also said he chaired a management committee meeting of Barisan component parties yesterday to come up with strategies to win back support for the ruling coalition.

He said the Barisan component parties agreed to meet at least once a month for discussions.
