193 illegals held in Semporna

The Star Online, Sunday July 20, 2008

KOTA KINABALU: Police detained 193 illegal immigrants in Semporna in raids ahead of the large-scale operations set to start next month.

The detainees, mostly Indonesians and Filipinos, were among 1,104 foreigners who were rounded up after a 12-hour operation on Friday night. The others were released.

Semporna district police chief Deputy Supt Mohd Azim Khan Abdullah said the raids were carried out jointly with agencies under the Federal Special Task Force set up to tackle illegal immigrant problem in Sabah and Labuan.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected to visit the army’s forward bases in Semporna next week.
