Indonesians know little on fighting human tafficking: ILO

12/17/08

Jakarta (ANTARA News)p
- Indonesia still has limited knowledge in dealing with human-trafficking issues, according to the International Labour Organization.

ILO`s representative in Indonesia Alan Boulton said here Tuesday people prone to practices of human trafficking were those who have very little knowledge on how to protect themselves against the crime.

This category covered women and children.

Speaking at a seminar titled "Human Trafficking From A Human Rights Perspective", Boulton warned that Indonesian women and children have been traded at domestic level to be sexually exploited commercially.

Despite the full support of the government and parliament, Boulton believed that Indonesia still has to step up it efforts and allocation of funds in a bid to fight against human trafficking at local and national level.

Proper facilities and counselling are not yet evenly available throughout the country, he said.

He urged the Indonesian government to increase its cooperation with the international community in fighting human trafficking.

The International Organization of Migration says that human trafficking occurs in a number of provinces in Indonesia.

During March 2005 through October 2008, most of the cases occurred in West Kalimantan, where 709 people became victims of human trafficking.

IOM has said that at least 2,432 Indonesians are traded in Malaysia. (*)
