At about 7.40pm yesterday, a mysterious body was found in the canal at the junction of Woodlands Avenue 12 and Gambas Avenue, later identified as a Indonesian maid who had just arrived in Singapore.

Clad in a red top and black tights, the 26-year-old woman had obvious injuries on her head.

Straitstimes.com reported that the maid had been working for a family living at Block 632 Woodland Ring Road for about six weeks. Her older sister is also working in Singapore.

An eyewitness, 50-year-old Mr Chen informed Shin Min Daily when he saw policemen and civil defence vehicles near the canal.

Shin Min reporters saw police tie the body to a stretcher and haul it from the drain up a long ladder with rope. They then spent at least six hours searching the area for clues.

Lianhe Wanbao reports that the body did not show signs of decomposition or bloating.

Police has classified the case as "unnatural death" and is investigating.
