Runaway maid: Domestic help denies stealing cash

XPress, Jan 15, 2008

A 36-year-old Indonesian housemaid pleaded not guilty to charges of stealing Dh7,000 from her employer but admitted running away.

The defendant, Sonartia D.B., was arrested a year after a complaint was filed by the employer, Abdullah R.B., 70, an Emirati, who complained his housemaid had run away with Dh7,000.

The Indonesian maid confessed that she decided to run away because of the bad treatment she received from her employer. She denied taking any money.

Court records show Sonartia testifying that she had headed to Sharjah to find another job, adding that she intended to later go back to her country. She was arrested at Dubai airport.

The case was adjourned for another hearing. The verdict is expected later this month.
