AN increasing number of Malaysian men are “buying” foreign wives, reported Utusan Malaysia.

Several matchmaking agencies are helping them to seek out the women, added the paper, quoting Women, Family and Community Development Ministry parliamentary secretary Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.

She said the agencies would find partners that fit the description given by the men, who had actually not met their prospective wives before.

“After the marriage, a lot of problems surface due to cultural differences, misunderstandings and being implicated with syndicates out to cheat the men,” said Chew, when replying to Senator Nordiana Shafie in the Dewan Negara.

On another issue, she told Senator Datuk Abdul Rashid Ngah that among the factors that had led to women delaying their marriages was the difficulty of getting compatible partners.

Citing the attitude of Chinese women, she said: “A highly-educated and high-earning woman will not marry a man of a lower status than her.”

Likewise, she added, Chinese men prefer women who are less educated then them.

> Harian Metro reported that a 27-year-old maid left a two-month old child unattended to have sex with her boyfriend, a carpet seller.

Her employer, who wants to be identified only as Asri, said he learned about the maid’s affairs on May 11 from a neighbour who had seen the man parking his motorcycle in the backyard of the house in Taman Selasih, Batu Caves.

Asri, 31, and his wife, later confronted the maid, who admitted the incident and asked for forgiveness.

“I am still hiring her as maids are hard to come by these days,” he said, adding that the woman’s work permit in Malaysia would expire in December. He has lodged a police report over the alleged neglect of his child.

> Kosmo! reported that newly-crowned Akademi Fantasia champion Norsyarmilla Jirin would hold a thanksgiving when she returns to her hometown in Teluk Kumbar, Penang after a series of public appearances in Kuala Lumpur and elsewhere.

The singer – fondly known as Mila – has yet to set the date for the feast due to her hectic schedule after being the first woman to win the TV talent search show.

“I will go back as soon as I have the free time. This is my promise,” added the winner of the just-concluded fifth season of AF during a visit to the newspaper’s office on Thursday.
