PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: The Asian Development Bank has provided Rp 6 billion (US$660) through its neighborhood improvement project to clean up slum areas in Palembang, an official said.
Head of the Palembang Public Works Office, Kira Tarigan, said the funds would be used to build a road network, provide clean water and improve sanitation and waste in five villages.
"The assistance is aimed at improving slum areas in Palembang," Tarigan said.
He said community members would be active partners in the work.
"The activities to be conducted will depend on proposals by the people themselves. The project is now in its preparation stage and is expected to be completed in December.
"A similar project was successfully carried out in Palembang last year. This project in Palembang has been chosen as a pilot project," he said. -- JP
