MUAR: Police here rounded up 86 illegal immigrants, including 10 women, during an operation from midnight to 5am in Parit Jawa and here yesterday.
The operation, comprising four senior police officers, 40 policemen, 30 Rela members and four Immigration Department officers, was aimed at curbing crime in the district.
Muar police chief Asst Comm. Mohamad Nasir Ramli said that the immigrants – 64 Indonesians and 22 Bangladeshis – were detained at factories and workers' hostels.
“We will question them to determine if they have any criminal record before surrendering them to the Immigration Department for the next course of action.
“Our aim is to flush out every illegal immigrant who has entered the country and is working without valid documents,” he told reporters at his office yesterday.
ACP Mohamad Nasir said police had started ongoing operations to round-up illegal immigrants found working in factories, plantations and construction sites to curb crime.
Besides illegal immigrants, the department also targeted drug addicts as many were suspected to be involved in house break-ins, motorcycle and snatch theft cases.
