Standardise policy on hiring foreign labour

Thursday April 24, 2008

PUTRAJAYA: The policy on the recruitment of foreign workers should be standardised regardless of the source country.

Foreign Workers Management and Supplier Firms Association (Tekam) pro tem president Datuk Baharom Abd Ghani said that a standard measure would have prevented the oversupply of labour from Bangladesh.

“Previously, the policy regarding intake of foreign workers from Bangladesh differed from those put in place for the 13 (other source) countries.

“This has led to many Bangladeshi workers being stranded here after failing to find work,” he said.

As a result, the intake of workers from Bangladesh was frozen in the middle of last year.

“We are asking for the recruitment policy to be standardised for all countries,” he told reporters at his office here yesterday.

This proposal, added Baharom, would be among those the association hoped to forward to the Home Minister.

“We are seeking an appointment with Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar soon,” he said, adding that he had submitted an application on April 7 for the association to be set up.

There are 270 outsourcing firms supplying foreign workers to various companies.
