PORT DICKSON: The Immigration Department has urged prospective employers of foreign maids and workers to deal only with recruitment agencies registered with the department to avoid being cheated.
Immigration Department director-general Datuk Mahmood Adam said this would make it easier to trace agents and workers who run away.
"We understand that the employer has to pay a fine if their maids run off, but remember, the contract is between the individual and the agency. So it is the responsibility of the individual to choose a reliable agent.
"However, an employer can still appeal the fine by applying to the Immigration Department," he said yesterday.
Mahmood said the details of registered agencies were listed on the department's website, www.imi.gov.my or the Malaysian Foreign Maids Agency Association (PAPA).
"Recently, we met with outsourcing agencies who supply foreign maids and workers to discuss their problems.
"We told them to be responsible when providing workers to clients and to take care of their training and welfare," Mahmood said after the closing ceremony of the second series of the General Induction and Specialisation Course KP17 for immigration officers at the Palm Springs Resort City here.
