SHAH ALAM: The Indonesian hostage-takers had demanded a getaway car and the release of their accomplices as part of the deal to release the woman.

But even then, they stressed that they wanted to take the victim, Raja Noriana Raja Ahmad, with them.

And this was something rejected by the chief negotiator, Datuk Khalid Abu Bakar.

"I tried my best to reason with them but they were just abusive. They threw stones at us and were shouting at the victim," said the Selangor police chief.

"They were behaving like madmen and then they started attacking the victim."
Khalid said he was trying to defuse the situation when he heard Raja Noriana pleading with the hostage-takers.

"My priority was to secure the victim's release."

Expressing regret over the victim's murder, Khalid stressed that police did everything possible to save Raja Noriana.

He later paid his condolences to the victim's family at the Subang Jaya Medical Centre.

Investigations so far have linked the robbery to the victim's former maid.

On Sept 1, four men had tried to break into the victim's house.

The maid was about to let them in when the family raised the alarm.

Later, she was sacked.

On Monday night, Raja Noriana received a text message from the maid who complained about her termination.

Raja Noriana showed the message to her husband but they ignored it.

Several hours later, the robbers struck.

Checks showed that Raja Noriana and her family were the only occupants in the new D'Kayangan neighbourhood. The other 40-odd houses are vacant.
